Devil In Action (6). 39 Dead in Nigeria Christmas Day Bomb Attacks, Boko Haram Claims Responsibility

Between 27 and 40 people have been killed in Nigeria on Christmas Day in a series of coordinated bomb attacks purportedly by Muslim group Boko Harm, including the bombing of several churches during holiday services.

A purported spokesman for Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the bombing of a church outside Nigeria's capital Abuja and other attacks. Nigeria's national security advisors have also blamed the group for the bombings.

'I don't know where my children are.'
Nigeria is a country divided between the mainly Muslim north and the largely Christian south. Boko Haram, an Islamist sect that aims to impose sharia law across the country, was responsible for a series of Christmas bombings in 2010, as well.

The first target, St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Madala near the capital, was filled with worshippers when a bomb exploded just outside. A Reuters reporter neat the church saw the front roof of the church and several houses near by destroyed by the blast. Five burnt out cars smoldered, some with passengers still inside.

Islamists Bomb Nigerian Churches on Christmas Day – At Least 25 Dead (Video)

Witnesses say at least 25 dead bodies removed from St. Theresa Church outside the Nigerian capital Abuja. There were four other attacks reported.

An explosion ripped through a Catholic church during Christmas Mass near Nigeria’s capital Sunday, killing at least 25 people, officials said. A radical Muslim sect claimed the attack and another bombing near a church in the restive city of Jos, as explosions also struck the nation’s northeast.

The Christmas Day attacks show the growing national ambition of the sect known as Boko Haram, which is responsible for at least 491 killings this year alone, according to an Associated Press count. The assaults come a year after a series of Christmas Eve bombings in Jos claimed by the militants left at least 32 dead and 74 wounded.

The first explosion on Sunday struck St. Theresa Catholic Church in Madalla, a town in Niger state close to the capital, Abuja, authorities said. Rescue workers recovered at least 25 bodies from the church and officials continued to tally those wounded in various hospitals, said Slaku Luguard, a coordinator with Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency.

U.S. Vows to Help Nigeria Find Christmas Bombers

Death toll rises in church attacks blamed on radical Muslim sect.

The United States is offering to help Nigeria track down the Islamic extremists behind Sunday's deadly Christmas bombings, Bloomberg News reports.
“We have been in contact with Nigerian officials about what appear to be terrorist acts and pledge to assist them in bringing those responsible to justice,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said in a statement. "We condemn this senseless violence and tragic loss of life on Christmas Day."
The death toll in the most deadly of the attacks—a bombing of a church in the capital, Abuja—has risen to 35, with another 52 wounded, the Associated Press reports. More than 40 are dead in all.
The violence has left worshippers fearful of further attacks. This is the second Christmas in a row that the radical, anti-Western Muslim sect Boko Haram has been blamed for deadly attacks on the Christian holiday. Last year, 32 were killed on Christmas Eve.

UPDATE: The AP's latest report from Nigeria on the Christmas bombings says 39 are dead according to officials, most from a powerful blast at a Catholic church during services.
The delayed response from authorities, who were not able to get enough ambulances and medical professionals to the scene to handle the aftermath of the attacks, has prompted anger and confusion in the vicinity of the explosions.  Read more at the AP's site.

UPDATE: Reuters, reporting from Abuja, Nigeria, puts the death toll from the Christmas day bomb attacks at 27 or more. Boko Haram, an Islamist group responsible for increasingly violent attacks in the country, have claimed the bombings as their work.
According to Reuters, five total bombs exploded in the country:
  • In Madalla, near the capital city of Abuja, a bomb explosion in or near a Catholic church killed at least 27 people gathered for Christmas services.
  • In Jos, a city at the dividing line between the country's Muslim north and Christian south, an evangelical church was the target of another explosion hours after the Madalla bomb. No deaths reported at this time.
  • Many wounded are reported in Gadaka, a northern town, after a bomb was set off a church.
  • Residents are reporting two explosions in Damaturu, also in the Muslim north. One of these possibly targeted the region's secret police headquarters. No other details are currently being reported.
Nigerian police found two more explosive devices in Jos, which were deactivated. Police arrested one man in connection to those explosives.
The BBC has a slideshow of photos from the aftermath. For continuing updates, follow @jongambrellAP, who is in Lagos, Nigeria.

UPDATE: The AP is reporting that there's been a third Christmas bombing in Nigeria at the region's secret police headquarters. It looks like the blast was a suicide car bomb.
We'll post here as more details emerge, but follow @jongambrellAP, who is in Lagos, Nigeria, for the latest updates.

POST Sunday, Dec. 25, at 7:32 AM: A bomb blast at a St Theresa's Church in Madalla, near Nigeria's capital city of Abuja, killed at least 25 people and injured many more during Christmas services Sunday. A second bombing in Jos has no reported injuries or deaths.
The AP reports that Boko Haram, an Islamist group loosely modeled on the Taliban, have claimed responsibility for the attacks in an interview Sunday with The Daily Trust, the "newspaper of record" for Nigeria's Muslim population.
The total dead is yet unknown at the chaotic scene of the bombing: while some bodies have been removed from the scene, emergency services said there weren't enough ambulances available to transport the dead and wounded, the AP notes.

"Most of our ambulances have gone to operate on the major highways of the country," National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) spokesman Yushau Shuaibu explained to Reuters earlier this morning. The Catholic church was packed for the holiday, and the blast hit hard enough to blow out windows in neighboring buildings.

The second blast was at Mountain of Fire and Miracles Church in Jos. Jos was the site of multiple bomb blasts on Christmas Eve of last year, killing 32 people. The city is the dividing line between the country's Christian south and Muslim north - the population is roughly evenly divided.

Boko Haram, who want to impose Sharia law on the country, were responsible for last year's attacks in Jos and have already been blamed for killing 465 people in Nigeria this year, the AP explains. Boko Haram's campaign over the past year has been increasingly violent. On Friday, the US Embassy in Abuja issued a warning to citizens, singling out churches as a potential site of violence.

Devil in Action (3)! Dozens dead in Nigeria Christmas bomb attacks

DEVIL IN ACTION!

Dozens killed in Nigeria Christmas bombings

Islamist militants set off bombs across in Nigeria on Christmas Day - targeting three churches, raising fears of sectarian civil war.

At least 40 people have been killed in Nigeria in Christmas Day bomb attacks, including some on churches during services.

A purported spokesman for Islamist group Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the bombing of a church outside the capital Abuja and other violence that has stoked fear and anger in Africa’s most populous nation.

Nigeria’s national security adviser has blamed Boko Haram for the attacks, in which people were killed as they left church. Some were burnt in their cars.

The attacks were condemned by the Vatican, the White House and several western countries.
Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice and said that ‘‘Nigerians must stand as one to condemn them’’.

The attacks occurred despite claims of recent arrests of Boko Haram members. Nigeria is roughly divided between a mainly Muslim north and a Christian south.

In one of Sunday’s attacks, a suicide bomber tried to ram a military convoy in front of a secret-police building in the northeastern city of Damaturu. Three security agents and the bomber were killed.
The area around the St Theresa Catholic Church, in Madalla outside Abuja, degenerated into chaos after the blast, as angry youths started fires and threatened to rush a nearby police station.
Police shot into the air to disperse them and closed a highway.A Vatican spokesman labelled the Madalla bombing an act of ‘‘blind hatred’’.

There was also a bomb blast outside an evangelical church in the central city of Jos. A spokesman for the governor said a policeman had been killed.

Another explosion targeted a church in the northeastern area of Gadaka on Christmas Eve, but no one was reported killed. Two other blasts - one of them the suicide bombing - hit the northeastern city of Damaturu on Christmas Day.

The church in Madalla showed signs of damage from a powerful blast, with  holes in the walls and a badly damaged roof. Cars were destroyed or badly damaged.National Security Adviser Owoye Azazi said in a statement that Boko Haram members had thrown improvised explosive devices from a moving vehicle at St Theresa Church.
Father Christopher Barde told AFP that the attack happened as the Christmas morning service was ending. Some of the wounded had run to him for blessings, including one person in a critical state.
‘‘It was really terrible,’’ said Barde. ‘‘Some people ran towards me - (saying) ’Father anoint me’.’’
Benjamin Ekwegbali, a social worker at the church, described scenes of horror and destruction, with ‘‘corpses littered everywhere’’.

He said there had been ‘‘a very loud sound’’ as people were leaving the church.
‘‘It shook everywhere,’’ he said. ‘‘When I looked back to see what happened, it was difficult to see anything. Everywhere was dark. Fire was burning.’’

Nigerian police affairs minister Caleb Olubolade, who visited the scene, said: ‘‘This is like an internal war against the country’’.

Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for scores of attacks in Nigeria, including the August suicide bombing of UN headquarters in Abuja that killed at least 24 people.
Boko Haram also claimed to have carried out a string of bomb blasts in the central city of Jos on Christmas Eve 2010.

In three cities in the northeast, where most of the violence attributed to Boko Haram has occurred, the attacks followed a military crackdown in which authorities and a right group say up to 100 people were killed. The chief of army staff was quoted by local media as saying soldiers had killed 59 Boko Haram members in Damaturu in shoot-outs on Thursday and Friday.

Violence blamed on the sect has steadily worsened in recent months, with bombings becoming more frequent and sophisticated. At least 280 people have been killed since November.

The attacks have continued despite well-publicised raids on so-called bomb factories and arrests of a number of alleged Boko Haram members. There has been intense speculation about whether Boko Haram (whose name means ‘‘Western education is sin‘‘) has links with Al-Qaeda’s north African branch.
Boko Haram launched an uprising in 2009 that was put down by a brutal military assault which left some 800 dead. Its mosque and headquarters in the northeastern city of Maiduguri were left in ruins.
The group went dormant for a time, then re-emerged in 2010 with a series of assassinations.

Islamist militants set off bombs across Nigeria on Christmas Day - three targeting churches including one that killed at least 27 people - raising fears that they are trying to ignite sectarian civil war.

The Boko Haram Islamist sect, which aims to impose sharia law across the country, claimed responsibility for the three church bombs, the second Christmas in a row the group has caused mass carnage with deadly bombings of churches. Security forces also blamed the sect for two other blasts in the north.
St Theresa's Catholic Church in Madala, a satellite town about 40 km (25 miles) from the centre of the capital Abuja, was packed when the bomb exploded just outside.
"We were in the church with my family when we heard the explosion. I just ran out," Timothy Onyekwere told Reuters. "Now I don't even know where my children or my wife are. I don't know how many were killed but there were many dead."

Hours after the first bomb, blasts were reported at the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Church in the central, ethnically and religiously mixed town of Jos, and at a church in northern Yobe state at the town of Gadaka. Residents said many were wounded in Gadaka, but there were no immediate further details.
A suicide bomber killed four security officials at the State Security Service in one of the other bombs, which struck the northeastern town of Damaturu, police said. Residents heard two loud explosions and gunfire in the town.

A Reuters reporter at the church near Abuja saw the front roof had been destroyed, as had several houses nearby. Five burnt out cars were still smouldering. There were scenes of chaos, as shocked residents stared at the wreckage in disbelief.

"Mass just ended and people were rushing out of the church and suddenly I heard a loud sound: 'Gbam!' Cars were in flames and bodies littered everywhere," Nnana Nwachukwu told Reuters.
Father Christopher Barde, Assistant priest of the church, said: "The officials who counted told me they have picked up 27 bodies so far."

Police cordoned off the area around the church. Thousands of furious youths set up burning road blocks on the highway from Abuja leading to Nigeria's largely Muslim north.
Police and the military tried to disperse them by firing live rounds into the air with tear gas.
"We are so angry," shouted Kingsley Ukpabi, as a queue of hooting vehicles lined up behind his flaming barrage.

ATTACKS INCREASE
Boko Haram - which in the Hausa language spoken in northern Nigeria means "Western education is sinful" - is loosely modelled on the Taliban movement in Afghanistan.

It has emerged as the biggest security threat in Nigeria, a country of 160 million split evenly between Christians and Muslims, who for the most part live side by side in peace.
Its low level insurgency used to be largely confined to northeastern Nigeria, but it has struck several parts of the north, centre and the capital Abuja this year.

Last Christmas Eve, a series of bomb blasts around Jos killed 32 people, and other people died in attacks on two churches in the northeast.
At the church near Abuja, a wounded man whose legs were almost shattered to pieces by the blast was loaded onto a stretcher near an ambulance by security services.
"I'll survive," he said in a hushed voice.

The blast in Jos, a tinderbox of ethnic and sectarian tensions that sometimes sees deadly clashes between Muslims and Christians, was accompanied by a shooting spree by militants, who exchanged fire with local police, said Charles Ezeocha, special taskforce spokesman for Jos.

"We lost one policeman and we have made four arrests. I think we can use them to get more information and work on that," he said. Police found four other explosive devices in Jos, which they deactivated, he added.

President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from the south who is struggling to contain the threat of Islamist militancy, called the incidents "unfortunate" but said Boko Haram would "not be (around) for ever. It will end one day."
The White House condemned "this senseless violence and tragic loss of life on Christmas Day."

"Women's rights activists particularly object to sentences that include lashing," said Sussan Tahmasebi, who herself is appealing a partly suspended two-year prison sentence for involvement in a banned demonstration in the capital in 2006.

"These sentences are intended to embarrass and humiliate human rights activists," she told Reuters.

She said Minou Mortazi, Nasrin Afzali and Nahid Jafari were sentenced to six months in jail and 10 lashes for attending a gathering outside a Tehran court in March last year where Tahmasebi and three other activists were standing trial.

The sentences were suspended so they will only be carried out if they are found guilty of another crime within two years.

A fourth activist who attended the March event, Zeinab Payghambarzadeh, was handed a two-year suspended jail term.

The court issued its ruling on the cases of Afzali, Jafari and Payghambarzadeh a few days ago while Mortazi received her sentence about two months ago.

They were all charged with taking part in an illegal gathering and collusion with the intent to disrupt national security, disruption of public order and refusal to follow police orders, Tahmasebi added.

Women are legally entitled to hold most jobs in Iran, but it remains dominated by men.

Activists, backed by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi, say women face institutionalized discrimination that makes them "second-class citizens" when it comes to divorce, inheritance, child custody and other aspects of life.

Iranian officials reject allegations of discrimination against women. Clerics say women in Iran are protected from the sex-symbol status they have in the West and insist the Islamic state is implementing God's divine law.

Western diplomats see the detention of women activists as part of a wider crackdown on dissent, which they say may be in response to international pressure over Iran's nuclear work. Tehran rejects Western accusations it is seeking to build bombs.
