Scroll through the list of search results and click the View button. Then the fun begins. Lest I forget, you can resize the application window any way you like. You can also opt to view in full-screen mode with a click of a button in the tool bar. Right-click options anywhere on the screen exists this mode and offers essential controls.

Seamless Streaming

When I clicked a sub topic called "Gymnastics Bloopers," the search panel window faded into the video viewing screen. The series of videos began playing instantly. As one ended, the next began. All I had to do was sit back and enjoy the show.

The playback controls remained on top of the window in case I wanted to go forward or back or pause. An adequate drop-down menu of options also remained accessible through the viewing.

A list of the most relevant videos related to the topic displays in a resizable left panel. That list is topped with further filtering buttons to show the most recent and most-viewed videos.

The actual video-viewing area fills the rest of the app window. The maximum video definition setting is displays in a status window in the bottom right of the app window. I notice very little resource degradation when I run Minitube on my well-powered desktop computers. Surprisingly, this app plays extremely well on my older laptops as well.

Since Minitube does not fire up Flash Player, the battery drain is not accelerated. Neither is the heat build up. Clearly, Minitube consumes less CPU.

Feature Fit

One of the things I dislike about viewing directly from the Youtube website in a browser is the advertisements that permeate so many of the videos. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that no ads appear when viewing the same videos in Minitube.

The one-click download feature makes saving videos effortless. Videos download in MPEG4 format. This is compatible with other mobile devices. I have easily copied downloaded videos to my bevy of other devices and had no trouble viewing them.

Compact Mode is another nifty feature. It retains the app window's orientation but maximizes the viewing real estate by removing the side panel. You can access this mode from the Video drop-down menu in the toolbar or the right click's context menu.

Channel Choosy

I also like the degree of flexibility that Minitube gives me. From both the video and the right-click menus I can select the YouTube Channel to switch to the native website view.

Minitube does not show comments and descriptions that accompany videos on the YouTube pages. This option provides a work-around. It automatically opens the default Web browser in another window. I can move back and forth at will.

Similarly, I can copy the YouTube link and the video stream URL. Both of these make it very easy to share a specific video by pasting the link directly into an email message or posting it on a social networking feed.

Getting It

The latest version is 1.6, released on Oct. 29. This version fixed a number of issues that cropped up in previous releases. So if you tried Minitube earlier and were unhappy with it, this latest version may give you a better result.

Minitube is readily available in resident package managers for leading Linux distros. These include Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Gentoo, ArchLinux, OpenSUSE, and Slackware. If you run a Debian-based distro, you can find the installation package here.

Vegas is where the tech biz congregates for the annual International Consumer Electronics Show, a showcase for the latest innovations in smart televisions, tablets, digital cameras and a whole lot more.

But not everything is revealed at CES. Apple never attends in any official capacity, though its activities from afar have been known to overshadow the Vegas proceedings. The 2007 introduction of the iPhone took place during CES, just not at CES.

At this year's show and well beyond, I expect that we'll see a continuation of major trends that took significant leaps in 2011: consumers growing comfortable with cloud-based services, voice controls and gesture-driven interfaces, fast 4G mobile networks, mobile payment options, ultrabook computers. You'll probably also see see further innovation in such technologies as glasses-free 3-D and augmented reality, though I'm not counting on either making a huge splash in 2012.

Windows 8

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, a regular at CES, will be addressing the throngs again, though for one final time. Microsoft has announced that this is its last CES. The Web is already abuzz over reports that the Taiwanese computer maker Asus plans to bring out a convertible Windows 8 machine that swivels from an ultrabook to a tablet.

While Nintendo will be showing its new Wii U at CES, Sony's next PlayStation (PS4) is more likely a 2013 bet. On the handheld side, Sony's Vita, the touch-based successor to its PlayStation Portable, recently went on sale in Japan and is slated to reach the U.S. in late February.

What is Cupertino cooking up?

Predicting what Apple will do next has long been a spectator sport. Much of the latest speculation is on the iPad 3 which, depending on who you believe, arrives sooner rather than later.

I'd love to see Apple's tablet get the spectacular supersharp screen that's on the iPhone. But that "Retina Display" might challenge the long battery life that the iPad 2 currently delivers. Rumors also hint at lower-priced and/or smaller-screen iPads (I'm not holding my breath), and iPads with superior cameras, which seems likely.

It's difficult to dismiss reports surrounding Apple TV, not the set-top box Apple already sells but an actual Apple-branded television. Regarding an integrated television that is simple to use, Apple's late CEO, Steve Jobs, told biographer Walter Isaacson, "I finally cracked it." Digitimes out of Asia — which frankly doesn't always get these things right — has indicated that Apple is targeting the second or third quarter of 2012 for the introduction of an iTV product. I do know that some of the traditional TV makers that I have talked to expect Apple to jump into the fray at some point. When, if at all in 2012, remains the big question.

The battle for third

It's practically a given that the iPhone and handsets based on Android will resume the battle for the top spot among smartphones. But it will be interesting to watch Research In Motion's BlackBerrys and Microsoft's Windows Phone duke it out for third. By all accounts, 2011 was an absolutely rotten year for RIM, and the company recently announced it would not bring out new BlackBerrys until late in 2012. Yikes. Keep an eye on new Windows Phones from Nokia to see if Microsoft can capture meaningful market share and Nokia can reinvigorate a brand that has faltered lately.

A camera to watch

Last year, Silicon Valley start-up Lytro unveiled the Lytro Light Field Camera, an unconventional, pocket-size point-and-shoot that takes "living pictures." What does that mean? For one thing, you can continue to focus pictures even after snapping an image. Lytro promises excellent low-light performance. (I'm eager to try it out.) Lytro is taking preorders on the camera, which costs $399 and up; delivery is promised soon.

For all that I expect tech-wise in 2012, count on plenty of surprises.

TV stations have been locked out of the screens we carry with us every day — those of cellphones. On Wednesday, they gained a foothold in the wireless world, though it's not yet clear whether there's real consumer demand.

MetroPCS Communications became the first U.S. cellphone company to announce plans for a phone that can tune in to live, local TV broadcasts. The capability will be part of a Samsung smartphone coming this year.

For years, TV stations have been unsuccessful in getting cellphone companies interested in such phones. Verizon Wireless and AT&T instead sold access to a broadcast network set up by Qualcomm. That network was shut down last year because of low consumer interest.

Stephen Jemente, product manager for digital media at MetroPCS, emphasized that its phone will be different in that it will get local stations, with weather and traffic reports. Its customers are also usually young and consume a lot of digital media, he said.

Dallas-based MetroPCS is the fifth-largest cellphone company in the U.S. with 9.1 million subscribers. It concentrates on big cities and low-income households.

"Consumers will be able to enjoy the local nightly news on the bus, their favorite daytime talk show on their lunch break or live sporting events while running errands," the company said.

MetroPCS didn't say what the TV-capable phones would cost or if it would charge a monthly fee to access TV broadcasts. The phones will have an extendable antenna for the TV signals.

It's difficult technically to get phones to tune in to regular broadcasts destined for TV sets. Instead, the Samsung phones will receive special "Mobile DTV" signals broadcast by 72 stations in 32 cities. They're usually retransmissions of their main channels, but at a lower resolution.

A few portable TV sets can already receive those signals for free. However, NBC and Fox will be encrypting their signals so they can only be received by the phone app that will be on the Samsung phone, according to Salil Dalvi, co-head of the Mobile Content Venture, which organizes the TV stations using Mobile DTV technology.

Meanwhile, the Federal Communications Commission is trying to shrink the amount of airwaves allocated to local TV broadcasts. It wants to let cellphone companies pay stations to vacate some of their frequencies so they can be used for mobile broadband instead. Congress has yet to give the FCC the authority to set up auctions for such deals.

It's possible to watch live TV on cellphones in several other countries, but it's only become a mainstream phenomenon in South Korea and Japan. Even there, smartphones without TV capabilities, including the iPhone, are crowding out domestic TV-capable phones.

Reactions to Samsung's Galaxy Note are anything but consistent, but the device is catching a lot of attention. Is it a whopper of a smartphone or a sleek little tablet? That seems to be the question of the day, but the answer is probably not important if consumers or businesses are drawn to it. Samsung isn't identifying a target market, but the company isn't likely playing coy. It probably doesn't know who wants it either.

Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy Note, which sports a 5.3-inch screen -- a size that places it between a typical smartphone and a tablet. It features an HD Super AMOLED display with a 180-degree viewing angle. The device comes with a slide-out stylus called the "S Pen" and sports a rear 8 MP camera capable of capturing video in 1080p HD, as well as a front 2 MP camera for video chat. The unit is powered by a 1.4 GHz dual core processor and runs the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system operating system.

The Note's overall dimensions clock in at 110mm x 58.2mm x 12.3mm. The device boasts 16 GB of storage and 1280x800 resolution, which is sharper than the iPhone 4 and the iPad.

Samsung is emphasizing the amount of power the unit wields, for its size, and the usability of its stylus for detailed art work and notes on the fly. The Galaxy Note will be compatible with WiFi, HSPA+ and LTE networks. Samsung has not yet determined a launch date.

Great Specs, Weird Size

While the Galaxy Note is an unusual size, it packs a strong set of features. As for whether it leans more toward being a phone or a tablet, it seems to favor tablet.

"I'll call it a tablet because it will not be supported for cellular voice," Chris Hazelton, research director for mobile and wireless at the 451 Group, told TechNewsWorld.

"It does support IP communications such as VoIP and Skype," he said. "It has a very good camera, a great processor, and a great screen. But it's hard not to compare it to Dell's (Nasdaq: DELL) 5-inch tablet, which has not gained much traction in the market."

The in-between size may present a marketing challenge for Samsung. There may be a limited group of potential buyers.

"The size is awkward. Will it fit in a pocket, or will you have to put it in a bag?" wondered Hazelton. "I can see people using this as an alternative to a notepad and pen, but that could be small pools of users. This device is very consumer-oriented -- it's strong for gaming. Yet it's not targeted for any certain type of user or Samsung would have mentioned it."

One important feature is the stylus that comes with the device. With most devices, the stylus is a pricey extra.

"Having the stylus included may draw some users," said Hazelton. "Usually a stylus isn't included and costs an extra (US)$50 to $75, so that could be attractive."

A New Market Segment

The Note could be the next step in a genre of tablets with small size yet large functionality. Packing even more features and power into phone-tablet hybrids could eliminate the need for laptops for some consumers.

"Samsung is clearly carving out a new sub-segment of tabletphones for itself by luring consumers with compelling slim slate design sporting cutting-edge specs," Neil Shah, analyst for wireless devices strategies at Strategy Analytics, told TechNewsWorld.

"Over the next two years, tabletphones are going to emerge as a popular segment as more and more vendors jump into this premium 4.5inch -- 5.5-inch bandwagon," he predicted.

Pocketability and mobility have been the key factors in driving the handset industry until now, Shah pointed out. Even a few inches added to the standard smartphone size can increase its ease of use and screen quality significantly.

"However, the smartphone, superphone and tablet revolution has led to a need for a device larger than four inches," said Shah. "The tabletphones segment offers a compelling form-factor and hits the sweet-spot in terms of size in enhancing the user-experience for a plethora of use-cases, such as better and comfortable Web browsing, HD-quality video viewing, superior gaming, video conferencing and the ability to take notes."
Who Is This For?

On the question of whether it's a phone or a tablet, Samsung may choose to not answer. Or it may say "both." If there is a market for an in-between-size device, it may not matter much.

"The first question to ask is, 'what is it?' Is this a small media tablet or a large smartphone?" asked Jeff Orr, group director of consumer research at ABI Research.

"Samsung is taking the approach that there is a market for a device in between those categories," he told TechNewsWorld.

"The second question is," said Orr, "is 'who is this for?' The demonstrations so far show a range of consumer and business uses from productivity to gaming. Perhaps businesses will look to offer employees larger mobile devices instead of the smartphone, in the future, while retaining the mobility that is not yet possible with media tablets."

Censor-Proof Satellite! Skynet: Hackers Dream Up Censor-Proof Satellite Internet Grid

Organizers of a project called the "Hackerspace Global Grid" want to launch a network of small, low-orbiting satellites in order to facilitate Internet access that can't be blocked by government censors. The network would also include an array of base stations around the world. The project's developers are excited, but doubters say it's not going to fly.

A group of computer enthusiasts have begun working on creating a satellite network that could be used to thwart censorship on the Internet.

Called the "Hackerspace Global Grid" (HGG), the network could provide a way for activists to access the Net when a repressive regime suppresses access within its borders.

The network would be based on a number of low orbiting "cube" satellites that would be networked in a way similar to the Internet. If one satellite were to be disabled, for example, its functions could be rerouted to others in the network.

Various amateur and educational organizations -- HAM radio operators, for example -- have found ways to get their cube satellites in orbit, and the hacker grid hopes to use those methods, as well as others, to get its spacecraft in low orbit too, according to Nick Farr, a hacker and accountant who is working on the project.

Cube Sat Explosion

"What we're seeing right now is a big explosion in people launching cube sats," Farr told TechNewsWorld.

Those satellites are small, have a near-earth orbit and have a small communication window with base stations on the ground.

To get a cube sat in the sky, amateur satellite launchers typically piggyback their bird on a bigger payload, Farr explained. Oftentimes launchers have more rocket than they need for their payload because of security, safety or some other reason. "So they'll have room for lots of smaller payloads that they can detach in near earth orbit," Farr said.

The HGG is now at its infancy stage. One of the first problems it has to solve is how to track the low orbiting satellites from the ground.

High orbiting satellites, like those used for telecommunications and geographic positioning, have a fixed position in the sky. That makes them easy to find from the ground.

The position of low orbiting satellites is more variable. What's more, they're moving fast, so the window for finding one and maintaining a connection to it is short.
Cellphone Net in Space

What the HGG is doing now is establishing a network of base stations around the world. Those stations won't be limited to tracking satellites, according to Armin Bauer, one of the lead hackers on the project.

"The first goal is to have the stations being able to track various things, for example airplanes, satellites, weather information," he told TechNewsWorld. "For various science fields, a large distributed sensor array is a good way to measure data."

Once the stations in the grid reach a certain critical mass, it would be possible for a network of low-orbiting satellites to be used much the way a cellular network operates. In a cellular network, calls are handed off to towers as a phone moves. With HGG, a communication link would be handed off from station to station as the satellite moves.

"We plan to have quite a lot of those stations distributed over the planet's whole surface, thus the grid can be used with these satellites since a satellite will always be in radio range of a ground station," Bauer explained.
Sidestepping Censors

Once the network is up and running, anyone could tap into it and reach the Internet from anywhere. "The whole point of it is to connect back to the global network to a place that's not as censored," Farr observed. So a person in China, for example, could link to the HGG and connect to the Internet through Germany or Japan and sidestep the domestic restrictions on their access.

"What they're doing is really cool and has a lot of interesting goals," Josh King, technology lead with the New America Foundation, told TechNewsWorld.

The foundation's Open Technology Initiative supports efforts to set up communication networks on the neighborhood, community and municipal level.

"They're creating a satellite network to connect people all over the world," King noted. "An endpoint of one of those satellite links might be an individual or a community network. Our project is building those community networks."

Lame Scheme

Creating a new satellite network is an ambitious project -- too ambitious in some people's minds.

"Satellite connections are expensive and slow," Tor Project development director Karen Reilly told TechNewsWorld. "It will take a lot of work to make this a more viable option."

The Tor Project offers free software that allows people to communicate anonymously on the Internet.

"This is the lamest scheme I have ever seen," Richard Stiennon, chief research analyst with IT-Harvest, told TechNewsWorld.

"The guys proposing this spouted off way before they put any thought into it," he said. "Give them points for dreaming big, but this project is going to need big dollars."

VoIP. How to Make VoIP Calls With Your Android Phone

Many smartphones are WiFi-capable, but that doesn't necessarily mean your carrier will support WiFi for voice calling -- particularly if you bought the phone elsewhere. You can use a Nexus S purchased from Best Buy to surf the Web on any WiFi network, for example -- but not to make voice calls. That can be a problem if you spend much time in an area where your carrier's cellular coverage is weak. The answer? VoIP.

If you live or work in an area with marginal cell service and want to use your Android smartphone to make and receive voice calls, you can. The key is to piggyback on an Internet connection at your location using the Internet bandwidth there to carry your voice traffic.

This method of calling works using Voice over Internet Protocol technology (VoIP) -- a form of calling over computer networks without traditional telephone copper wire. You are abandoning your lackluster cellphone signal and routing your voice traffic over a WiFi router, and down into the depths of the Internet pipe.

There are two approaches to setting this up. One involves SIP, or Session Internet Protocol, a signaling technology called that's widely used in commercial VoIP applications. The other is to use the proprietary Internet calling system Skype. Skype simply involves downloading an app and opening an account, whereas SIP can be complicated to set up, with cryptic settings.

Both of these approaches let you make calls anywhere you have access to a WiFi router. As with many technology projects, it's not a bad idea to set up both for redundancy purposes, and to play around until you find the solution that suits you best. I've found the Skype Android app with paid (US$60 per year) incoming number to be better call quality than SIP, yet SIP is a significantly cheaper solution because the incoming number is free.

1st: Sign Up

Open an account at a SIP trunking provider like Tpad, Callcentric, or SIP2SIP by browsing to the provider's website on your PC and entering your details in the Web-based form.

There are numerous providers out there with varying quality of service. Quality of service is generally based on bandwidth -- both yours and the provider's. Try different trunking providers if necessary.

2nd: Gather Settings

Make a note of the SIP account number that the provider will have sent you in Step 1. Then browse to the setup instructions area of the provider's website.

Look for the server, proxy, ports and other trunking-specific settings. For example, Tpad's Server or proxy is "sip.tpad.com" and doesn't require a domain; yet SIP2SIP uses a proxy of "proxy.sipthor.net" and a separate, distinct domain of "sip2sip.info."

3rd: Set Up the App

Download a free SIP/VoiP client like Sipdroid from the Android Market and allow it to install on your phone.

Click on the "Settings" menu option in the Sipdroid app and enter the exact syntaxes you obtained following Step 2 in the "Server or Proxy" and other fields.

Other key pieces of information to enter may include the Authorization Username, which is your account number; the password you set up; the port, usually 5060. Just follow the lead from the provider's website and enter each syntax carefully.

Choose "WLAN" in the Sipdroid app's "Settings" to route the call over the phone's WiFi radio. Then turn on the WiFi radio within the phone's "Wireless and Networks" setting.

4th: Obtain an Incoming Number

Visit IPKall's website on your PC and enter your details in the form there. IPKall will provide you with a free, incoming Washington state phone number that can be used by callers to reach you. They dial the number provisioned and it terminates at your SIP account -- ringing your phone.

The Web page form's field labeled "Hostname or IP address" is where you enter the same server or proxy that you entered in the Sipdroid app earlier. For example, sip.tpad.com. Some SIP trunking providers, like Callcentric, for example, offer parallel services as IPKall, but they charge you.

5th: Run a Test

Perform an outgoing call test by dialing the number that the SIP provider has given you for testing purposes. This varies too. Tpad provides a test number, but Callcentric doesn't. If the quality of service is acceptable, purchase some minutes on the website for calling. I'd start with the minimum -- usually $10 worth until you're sure the quality of the provider you've chosen is acceptable. SIP2SIP's minimum is $20. The per minute call charges are nominal across all of the services, including Skype.

Perform an incoming call test by dialing the IPKall number from a regular telephone. It should ring on your smartphone through the Sipdroid interface rather than the regular Android interface.

Tip: Look for a green notification tray dot on your phone to verify Sipdroid is successfully connected to the server.

Death toll rises in church attacks blamed on radical Muslim sect.

The United States is offering to help Nigeria track down the Islamicextremists behind Sunday's deadly Christmas bombings, BloombergNews reports.
“We have been in contact with Nigerian officials about what appear to beterrorist acts and pledge to assist them in bringing those responsible tojustice,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said in a statement. "Wecondemn this senseless violence and tragic loss of life on Christmas Day."
The death toll in the most deadly of the attacks—a bombing of a church inthe capital, Abuja—has risen to 35, with another 52 wounded, the AssociatedPress reports. More than 40 are dead in all.
The violence has left worshippers fearful of further attacks. This is thesecond Christmas in a row that the radical, anti-Western Muslim sect Boko Haramhas been blamed for deadly attacks on the Christian holiday. Last year, 32 werekilled on Christmas Eve.

UPDATE: The AP'slatest report from Nigeria on the Christmas bombings says 39 are dead accordingto officials, most from a powerful blast at a Catholic church duringservices.

In Jos, a city at the dividing line between the country's Muslim north and Christian south, an evangelical church was the target of another explosion hours after the Madalla bomb. No deaths reported at this time.
Many wounded are reported in Gadaka, a northern town, after a bomb was set off a church.
Residents are reporting two explosions in Damaturu, also in the Muslim north. One of these possibly targeted the region's secret police headquarters. No other details are currently being reported.

Nigerian police found two more explosive devices in Jos, which weredeactivated. Police arrested one man in connection to those explosives.

The APreports that Boko Haram, an Islamist group loosely modeled on the Taliban, haveclaimed responsibility for the attacks in an interview Sunday with TheDaily Trust, the "newspaper of record" for Nigeria's Muslimpopulation.
The total dead is yet unknown at the chaotic scene of the bombing: whilesome bodies have been removed from the scene, emergency services said thereweren't enough ambulances available to transport the dead and wounded, the AP notes.

"Most of our ambulances have gone to operate on the major highways ofthe country," National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) spokesman YushauShuaibu explained to Reutersearlier this morning. The Catholic church was packed for the holiday, and theblast hit hard enough to blow out windows in neighboring buildings.

The second blast was at Mountain of Fire and Miracles Church in Jos. Jos wasthe site of multiple bomb blasts on Christmas Eve of last year, killing 32people. The city is the dividing line between the country's Christian south andMuslim north - the population is roughly evenly divided.

Boko Haram, who want to impose Sharia law on the country, were responsiblefor last year's attacks in Jos and have already been blamed for killing 465people in Nigeria this year, the AP explains. Boko Haram's campaign over thepast year has been increasingly violent. On Friday, the US Embassy in Abuja issueda warning to citizens, singling out churches as a potential site ofviolence.

At least 40 people have been killed in Nigeria in Christmas Day bomb attacks, including some on churches during services.

A purported spokesman for Islamist group Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the bombing of a church outside the capital Abuja and other violence that has stoked fear and anger in Africa’s most populous nation.

Nigeria’s national security adviser has blamed Boko Haram for the attacks, in which people were killed as they left church. Some were burnt in their cars.

The attacks were condemned by the Vatican, the White House and several western countries.
Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice and said that ‘‘Nigerians must stand as one to condemn them’’.

The attacks occurred despite claims of recent arrests of Boko Haram members. Nigeria is roughly divided between a mainly Muslim north and a Christian south.

In one of Sunday’s attacks, a suicide bomber tried to ram a military convoy in front of a secret-police building in the northeastern city of Damaturu. Three security agents and the bomber were killed.
The area around the St Theresa Catholic Church, in Madalla outside Abuja, degenerated into chaos after the blast, as angry youths started fires and threatened to rush a nearby police station.
Police shot into the air to disperse them and closed a highway.A Vatican spokesman labelled the Madalla bombing an act of ‘‘blind hatred’’.

There was also a bomb blast outside an evangelical church in the central city of Jos. A spokesman for the governor said a policeman had been killed.

Another explosion targeted a church in the northeastern area of Gadaka on Christmas Eve, but no one was reported killed. Two other blasts - one of them the suicide bombing - hit the northeastern city of Damaturu on Christmas Day.

The church in Madalla showed signs of damage from a powerful blast, with holes in the walls and a badly damaged roof. Cars were destroyed or badly damaged.National Security Adviser Owoye Azazi said in a statement that Boko Haram members had thrown improvised explosive devices from a moving vehicle at St Theresa Church.
Father Christopher Barde told AFP that the attack happened as the Christmas morning service was ending. Some of the wounded had run to him for blessings, including one person in a critical state.
‘‘It was really terrible,’’ said Barde. ‘‘Some people ran towards me - (saying) ’Father anoint me’.’’
Benjamin Ekwegbali, a social worker at the church, described scenes of horror and destruction, with ‘‘corpses littered everywhere’’.

He said there had been ‘‘a very loud sound’’ as people were leaving the church.
‘‘It shook everywhere,’’ he said. ‘‘When I looked back to see what happened, it was difficult to see anything. Everywhere was dark. Fire was burning.’’

Nigerian police affairs minister Caleb Olubolade, who visited the scene, said: ‘‘This is like an internal war against the country’’.

Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for scores of attacks in Nigeria, including the August suicide bombing of UN headquarters in Abuja that killed at least 24 people.
Boko Haram also claimed to have carried out a string of bomb blasts in the central city of Jos on Christmas Eve 2010.

In three cities in the northeast, where most of the violence attributed to Boko Haram has occurred, the attacks followed a military crackdown in which authorities and a right group say up to 100 people were killed.The chief of army staff was quoted by local media as saying soldiers had killed 59 Boko Haram members in Damaturu in shoot-outs on Thursday and Friday.

Violence blamed on the sect has steadily worsened in recent months, with bombings becoming more frequent and sophisticated. At least 280 people have been killed since November.

The attacks have continued despite well-publicised raids on so-called bomb factories and arrests of a number of alleged Boko Haram members.There has been intense speculation about whether Boko Haram (whose name means ‘‘Western education is sin‘‘) has links with Al-Qaeda’s north African branch.

St Theresa's Catholic Church in Madala, a satellite town about 40 km (25miles) from the centre of the capital Abuja, was packed when the bomb explodedjust outside.
"We were in the church with my family when we heard the explosion. Ijust ran out," Timothy Onyekwere told Reuters. "Now I don't even knowwhere my children or my wife are. I don't know how many were killed but therewere many dead."

Hours after the first bomb, blasts were reported at the Mountain of Fire andMiracles Church in the central, ethnically and religiously mixed town of Jos,and at a church in northern Yobe state at the town of Gadaka. Residents saidmany were wounded in Gadaka, but there were no immediate further details.
A suicide bomber killed four security officials at the State SecurityService in one of the other bombs, which struck the northeastern town ofDamaturu, police said. Residents heard two loud explosions and gunfire in thetown.

A Reuters reporter at the church near Abuja saw the front roof had beendestroyed, as had several houses nearby. Five burnt out cars were stillsmouldering. There were scenes of chaos, as shocked residents stared at thewreckage in disbelief.

"Mass just ended and people were rushing out of the church and suddenlyI heard a loud sound: 'Gbam!' Cars were in flames and bodies litteredeverywhere," Nnana Nwachukwu told Reuters.
Father Christopher Barde, Assistant priest of the church, said: "Theofficials who counted told me they have picked up 27 bodies so far."

Police cordoned off the area around the church. Thousands of furious youthsset up burning road blocks on the highway from Abuja leading to Nigeria'slargely Muslim north.
Police and the military tried to disperse them by firing live rounds intothe air with tear gas.
"We are so angry," shouted Kingsley Ukpabi, as a queue of hootingvehicles lined up behind his flaming barrage.

ATTACKS INCREASE
Boko Haram - which in the Hausa language spoken in northern Nigeria means"Western education is sinful" - is loosely modelled on the Talibanmovement in Afghanistan.

It has emerged as the biggest security threat in Nigeria, a country of 160million split evenly between Christians and Muslims, who for the most part liveside by side in peace.
Its low level insurgency used to be largely confined to northeasternNigeria, but it has struck several parts of the north, centre and the capitalAbuja this year.

Last Christmas Eve, a series of bomb blasts around Jos killed 32 people, andother people died in attacks on two churches in the northeast.
At the church near Abuja, a wounded man whose legs were almost shattered topieces by the blast was loaded onto a stretcher near an ambulance by securityservices.
"I'll survive," he said in a hushed voice.

The blast in Jos, a tinderbox of ethnic and sectarian tensions thatsometimes sees deadly clashes between Muslims and Christians, was accompaniedby a shooting spree by militants, who exchanged fire with local police, saidCharles Ezeocha, special taskforce spokesman for Jos.
